Developer FAQ

Short answers to what developers ask first.

Does reTrade connect to my broker?

No. reTrade never connects to your broker, never holds your broker login and never moves money. Your own code, the adapter, reads the account and places orders; the SDK calls it.

Which brokers can I use?

The SDK has no broker-specific code. You connect a broker by writing four functions: read the account, submit, find and cancel. If your code can do those with a broker’s API, the SDK can use it.

Does an order ever wait for a person?

No. Every order gets ALLOW, CUT or BLOCK in the same request. There are no holds and no approval step.

What happens if reTrade is down?

The SDK blocks the order itself after 2.5 seconds, and nothing is placed. The one exception is exits-only, an account setting your admins can turn on, which lets certain limit sells of shares you hold go ahead.

Can my AI agent change its own limits?

No. An agent’s key can ask for decisions and engage a stop, never change limits, modes or keys. Your admins set the rules with their own keys.

Do I have to change my AI agent?

No. Your agent keeps deciding what to trade. You change the place your bot sends orders, so every order goes through place.

Can I try it without changing what my bot does?

Yes, in shadow mode. Your agent’s orders are placed unchanged, whatever the answer, and reTrade records what it would have done. Ask your admin for a shadow key.

Does reTrade insure my trades or pay for losses?

No. reTrade is not an insurer, doesn’t insure or guarantee against any loss and pays no losses. Insurable means each decision is signed, logged and kept as evidence, so an insurer can underwrite the risk and assess a claim. Whether a loss is covered is up to the insurer.

Can I use it with real money today?

Not yet. reTrade is pre-release, and live trading isn’t switched on yet. Test with a paper or practice account.

How do I get keys?

Your tenant’s admin registers your bot’s key and gives you its id and an account ref; reTrade gives you the root public key. To get started, ask for a pilot.

Which languages are supported?

Python 3.12 or later, and TypeScript or JavaScript on Node 22.18 or later.

Can my AI coding agent do the integration?

Yes: give it SKILL.md. It walks an agent through adding the check to a bot you already have, with a test that checks the bot fails closed.
