Words we use

The ideas you need to follow this site.

Broker, Investing

The company that holds your investments and places your trades, such as Interactive Brokers (IBKR), Questrade, Robinhood or Wealthsimple.

Order, Investing

An instruction to buy or sell, for example “buy 10 shares of Apple.”

AI agent, AI

An AI program, like ChatGPT or Claude, that can act for you, such as placing trades, not just answer questions. On this site it means an AI connected to your investment account.

Rules (we call them the mandate), Our term

Your written limits for what any AI may do with your money, for example “never more than 15% of my money in one stock.”

Receipt or record, Our term

The written entry for one decision: who asked, what was checked and what happened. Each one is linked to the one before, so changes show.

Hash, Computing

A digital fingerprint of some data. Change one character and the fingerprint changes completely.

The four answers, Our term

Go ahead (it fits your rules), cut down (to the largest size your rules allow), wait for you (it needs your OK) and stop (it breaks a rule outright).

Blast radius, Our term

The most any AI could change in your account today without your OK, calculated from your rules.

Design partner, Business

An early customer who tries a product before it’s finished and helps shape it, usually in exchange for a discount.

Premium and claim, Insurance

The premium is the price of insurance. A claim is a request to be paid after something goes wrong.

Superficial loss and wash sale, Tax

Canadian and US tax rules. If you sell at a loss and the same thing is bought within 30 days before or after the sale, you can’t claim the loss then. Usually it’s added to the cost of the new shares instead; if the buy is in a TFSA, RRSP or IRA, the loss can be gone for good.

TFSA, Tax

Canada’s Tax-Free Savings Account, which has its own rules on what you can hold and do inside it.

Simulated broker, Investing

A stand-in for a real broker that fills orders on paper. Every order on this site goes to one, so nothing real is traded.
